Word Origin:
mid 16th cent.: from medieval Latin sororitas, or from Latin soror ‘sister’ (on the pattern of fraternity).

Culture:
Members often live together in a sorority house. They are called ‘Greeks’, because each sorority’s name consists of two or three Greek letters, such as Chi Omega or Kappa Kappa Gamma. They also help charities and do community work. A few student sororities are academic or professional organizations.
