egg-rolling [egg-rolling] BrE NAmE noun [U]
a traditional ↑Easter custom in northern England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the ↑Isle of Man. Each person taking part rolls a ↑hard-boiled egg down a slope, and if it is not damaged at the bottom they will be lucky in various ways. Egg-rolling was introduced into the US in 1877 by Dolly Madison, the wife of President James ↑Madison. It was originally done at Easter on ↑Capitol Hill in ↑Washington, DC, and later in the grounds of the ↑White House. It also takes place in many local communities.
