a US state on the Atlantic coast, also called the Old Dominion. Its largest city is Virginia Beach, and the capital city is ↑Richmond. It was the first permanent English ↑colony in North America and was named after the ‘Virgin Queen’, ↑Elizabeth I. It was one of the original ↑thirteen colonies, and the ↑American Revolution was ended by the Battle of ↑Yorktown in Virginia. Richmond became the capital of the ↑Confederate States and the Civil War ended at ↑Appomattox Court House. Eight presidents were born in Virginia, including George ↑Washington, Thomas Jefferson and Woodrow Wilson. Local products include tobacco and electrical equipment. Among the tourist attractions are ↑Williamsburg, ↑Mount Vernon and ↑Monticello.
