Romanesque
Ro·man·esque BrE [ˌrəʊməˈnesk] NAmE [ˌroʊməˈnesk] adjective used to describe a style of ↑architecture that was popular in western Europe from the 10th to the 12th centuries and that had round arches, thick walls and tall ↑pillars see also ↑Norman Word Origin: [Romanesque] French, from roman ‘romance’. Culture: English Romanesque architecture, which developed from about 1150, is usually called ↑Norman architecture, and one of the finest examples is ↑Durham cathedral. It was replaced by the ↑Gothic style.
