a state in the north-eastern US, also called the Keystone State for its central position among the 13 original states. The largest city is ↑Philadelphia, and the capital city is Harrisburg. The area was established for ↑Quakers in 1681 by William Penn, who named it Pennsylvania (‘Penn’s small forest’) for his father. The Battle of Gettysburg was fought there during the ↑American Civil War. The state produces chemicals, medicines, electronic equipment and farm products. Tourist attractions include ↑Valley Forge and the ↑Pennsylvania Dutch region.
