Louisville [Louisville] BrE NAmE
the second largest city in the US state of ↑Kentucky, on the ↑Ohio River. It was settled in 1778 and named after King Louis XVI of France, and the University of Louisville was established in 1798. The US used the town as a military base during the Civil War. The ↑Kentucky Derby is held in Louisville, and the city produces ↑bourbon (= whisky made from corn grain), cigarettes, paint and household electrical items.
