knock-knock joke
knock-knock joke [knock-knock joke] BrE NAmE noun a type of joke that depends on the way in which some words in English sound like other words. The person telling the joke says ‘Knock-knock’, someone answers ‘Who’s there?’, and the first person says a name which isn’t what it seems. A typical example might be: ‘Knock-knock.’ ‘Who’s there?’ ‘Lucy.’ ‘Lucy who?’ ‘Lucy Lastic (= loose elastic)’
