1. 1 the largest city in the US state of ↑Missouri. It is connected to Kansas City, ↑Kansas and was established at the beginning of the ↑Santa Fe Trail. It is now a major industrial centre for the production of steel and vehicles. In the late 1920s, Kansas City became a centre for ↑jazz. ‘Count’ Basie and ‘Duke’ Ellington both began their careers there.
2. 2 a city in eastern ↑Kansas. It is connected to Kansas City, ↑Missouri, but is only one third as large. The two cities are situated where the Missouri River and Kansas River meet. This smaller city was originally formed from eight separate towns.
