Edward I [Edward I] BrE NAmE NAmE
(1239–1307) the king of England from 1272 to 1307, the eldest son of ↑Henry III. He spent a lot of time trying to control Wales and Scotland, fighting, among others, William Wallace and ↑Robert the Bruce. As a result he was called the ‘Hammer of the Scots’. In 1296 he brought the ↑Stone of Scone to England. Although he was the first ↑Norman king of England called Edward, there were two King Edwards before the ↑Conquest.
