Dorchester
▪ I. Dorchester [Dorchester] BrE NAmE a town in ↑Dorset in southern England with a long history. Nearby ↑Maiden Castle was occupied at least 4 000 years ago, and there was a Roman town, Durnovaria, where Dorchester now stands. In the 19th century, the ↑Tolpuddle Martyrs were put on trial in Dorchester and the author Thomas Hardy was born there. In his novels the town is called Casterbridge. ▪ II. the Dorchester [the Dorchester] BrE NAmE a well-known expensive hotel in London’s ↑Park Lane. It first opened in 1931.
