1. 1 the second largest city in the US state of ↑Ohio. It is on Lake Erie and is a major port. John D Rockefeller began ↑Standard Oil there in 1870. Cleveland was the first large US city to have an African-American ↑mayor.
2. 2 a former county in north-east England, formed in 1974 from parts of Durham and North Yorkshire. Its administrative centre was Middlesbrough.
