(originally a derogatory term for a well-fed servant): the current sense dates from the late 17th cent. Culture: Beefeaters are thought to have existed since the ↑White Tower was built in the 11th century. They wear a red uniform from the ↑Tudor period similar to that worn by the ↑Yeomen of the Guard. For visitors to London, they are often seen as one of the symbols of the city.
