a member of the Church of England or of a Church connected with it in another country

Word Origin:
early 17th cent.: from medieval Latin Anglicanus (its adoption suggested by Anglicana ecclesia ‘the English church’ in the Magna Carta), from Latin Anglicus, from Angli ‘the people of Angul , a district of Schleswig (now part of northern Germany), so named because of its shape; of Germanic origin, related to Old English angul.

Culture:
In Britain the Anglican Churches are the ↑Church of England, the ↑Church in Wales, the ↑Episcopal Church in Scotland, and the Church of Ireland. In the US, the Anglican Communion is represented by the ↑Episcopal Church. Many people in Britain call themselves Anglican, even if they never go to church.
