Tennessee [Tennessee] BrE NAmE a south-eastern US state, also called the Volunteer State. It became a state in 1796 and later joined the ↑Confederate States. Many Civil War battles were fought there. The largest city is ↑Memphis and the capital city is ↑Nashville. Tourist attractions include the ↑Great Smoky Mountains, ↑Graceland and the ↑Grand Ole Opry.
