Standard Oil
Standard Oil [Standard Oil] BrE NAmE
a large US oil company established in 1870 by John D Rockefeller. In 1911 the US ↑Supreme Court decided it restricted trade and divided it into 34 individual companies. Rockefeller’s original company became Standard Oil (Ohio). It was bought by British Petroleum ( ↑BP) in 1987 and named BP America. The Standard Oil Company (Indiana) became Amoco in 1985. The Amoco Building, opened in 1973 in ↑Chicago as the Standard Oil Building, is one of the tallest in the world.
