Sioux
Sioux 7 BrE [suː] NAmE [suː] noun (pl. Sioux) a member of a Native American people many of whom live in the US state of South Dakota Word Origin: [Sioux] North American French, from Nadouessioux from Ojibwa (Ottawa dialect) nātowēssiwak, by substitution of the French plural ending -x for the Ojibwa plural -ak. Culture: The Sioux are also called the Dakota people. They were originally an association of seven groups on the ↑Great Plains where, led by ↑Sitting Bull and ↑Crazy Horse, they fought the US Army. They defeated General George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn but lost their final battle at ↑Wounded Knee.
