Richmond
Richmond [Richmond] BrE NAmE 1. 1 a town in North Yorkshire, England. It is famous for its castle, built in the late 11th century on a hill above the town, and its theatre, opened in 1788. 2. 2 a town on the River ↑Thames in the ↑borough of Richmond-upon-Thames in London, England. It is close to two large parks, ↑Richmond Great Park and ↑Kew Gardens. King ↑Henry VII built a ↑palace at Richmond in the late 15th century, but only a small part of the building now remains. 3. 3 the capital city of the US state of ↑Virginia. It is a port on the James River. Patrick Henry made his famous ‘liberty or death’ speech there. Richmond was the capital city of the ↑Confederate States during the Civil War and was destroyed by US soldiers in 1865. Its products include machinery and processed tobacco, food and wood.
