the New Forest
the New Forest [the New Forest] BrE NAmE an attractive area of countryside in southern England consisting of forest and open wild land covered with rough grass. It has belonged to the ↑royal family since ↑William the Conqueror began hunting there in 1079. It is a popular tourist centre, and especially well known for the New Forest ponies, a breed of small horses living there in almost wild conditions.
