the National Security Council
the National Security Council [the National Security Council] BrE NAmE (abbrthe NSC) a committee responsible for advising the US ↑President on matters of national security (= the protection of the nation and its interests) and defence policies. It was established by ↑Congress in 1947. The President leads the committee’s meetings, and other NSC members are the Vice-President, the ↑Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense. They are advised by the Chairman of the ↑Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Director of the ↑CIA.
