a southern US state, also called the Magnolia State. Jackson is the largest city and also the capital. Mississippi became a state in 1817 and was one of the ↑Confederate States. It has had conflicts between the races, especially in the 1960s. Its main product is cotton, but other crops include corn, ↑soya beans, ↑peanuts and rice. Tourists can visit the Vicksburg National Military Park and the historical buildings at ↑Natchez.
