the Marx Brothers [the Marx Brothers] BrE NAmE
a US comedy team of three brothers who made films full of crazy visual humour and quick, clever jokes. They were ‚Groucho’ (Julius) Marx (1890–1977), ‚Chico’ (Leonard) Marx (1886–1961) and ‚Harpo’ (Adolph) Marx (1888–1964). Their films included Duck Soup (1933) and A Day at the Races (1937). Groucho wore glasses and a large false ↑moustache, walked in a funny way and smoked ↑cigars. Chico played the piano, wore a pointed hat and spoke like an Italian-American. Harpo never spoke, played the ↑harp and chased girls. Groucho later had his own comedy television quiz show, You Bet Your Life (1950–61). Please accept my resignation. I don’t want to belong to any club that will accept me as a member. Groucho Marx
