Jerusalem
Jerusalem [Jerusalem] BrE NAmE a famous poem (1804) by William Blake, later set to music by Hubert Parry (1848–1918). It expresses the hope for a future Christian society in ‘England’s green and pleasant land’ to replace the horrors of ‘the dark Satanic mills’ of the ↑Industrial Revolution. It is traditionally sung at the ↑Last Night of the Proms as well as by ↑Women's Institutes and in churches.
