Jarrow
Jarrow [Jarrow] BrE NAmE a town in north-east England where the ↑shipbuilding and steel industries were badly affected by the ↑Depression in the 1930s, making many workers unemployed. In 1936 about 200 unemployed workers walked 274 miles/441 kilometres from Jarrow to London on a ‘hunger march’ in an attempt to persuade the government to do something about the problem.
