a US state in the ↑Middle West. Its popular name is the Hawkeye State, and people from Iowa are called Hawkeyes, probably after Chief Black Hawk, a Native American leader. Iowa was part of the ↑Louisiana Purchase and became a state in 1846. Iowa is known for its agriculture, and it is the largest producer of corn, soya beans, and pigs in the US. ↑Des Moines is the capital and largest city.
