the Hudson River School
the Hudson River School [the Hudson River School] BrE NAmE a group of 19th-century artists, some of whom were born in Europe, who painted romantic ↑landscapes (= pictures of the countryside) in the US, including in the ↑Hudson River Valley. The paintings led Americans to see their country in a new way. The founder of the group was Thomas Cole and it also included Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt and Frederic Church.
