the Great Smoky Mountains
the Great Smoky Mountains [the Great Smoky Mountains] BrE NAmE (alsothe Great Smokies) a beautiful part of the ↑Appalachian Mountains that separates ↑Tennessee from ↑North Carolina. It gets its name from the thin clouds like smoke which often cover the valleys. The highest point is Clingman’s Dome (6 642 feet/2 026 metres). Most of the area is within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which was established in 1934 and was made a ↑World Heritage Site in 1983.
