the Great Plains
the Great Plains [the Great Plains] BrE NAmE a large area of the west central US where the land is high and flat. It includes the 10 ↑Plains States, stretching about 400 miles/644 kilometres east from the ↑Rocky Mountains, and from Canada to southern ↑Texas. It was the home of the ↑Plains Indians and is also called the ↑Wheat Belt of America, although dry weather in the 1930s turned the southern part into the ↑Dust Bowl.
