The Grand Old Duke of York [The Grand Old Duke of York] BrE NAmE a British ↑nursery rhyme about the Duke of York, a soldier who was the second son of ↑George III. It is sometimes quoted when somebody cannot decide what to do. The first verse is: Oh the Grand old Duke of York He had ten thousand men, He marched them up to the top of the hill And he marched them down again.
