  GP  [GP] BrE [ˌdʒiː ˈpiː]  NAmE [ˌdʒiː ˈpiː]   noun  (BrE)  the abbreviation for  ‘general practitioner ’ (a doctor who is trained in general medicine and who works in the local community, not in a hospital)   •Go and see your GP as soon as possible.    •There are four GPs in our local practice.    •Her GP referred her to a specialist.        Culture:     GPs can write  prescriptions   (= instructions that allow people to buy medicines), and may recommend that a person goes to see a specialist in a particular disease. Patients are usually treated at the doctor’s  surgery, and may also be visited at home. GPs are employed by the  ↑National Health Service  but they may also have some  ↑private patients.
