De Profundis [De Profundis] BrE NAmE
a long letter written by Oscar Wilde in 1897 and published in 1905. It was written to his lover, Lord Alfred ↑Douglas, when Wilde was in prison. The Latin title means from the depths, and the serious tone of the letter makes a strong contrast with the clever humour of his earlier works.
