the Continental Congress
the Continental Congress [the Continental Congress] BrE NAmE
the first governing body (1774–89) of the ↑thirteen colonies which later became the US. It met in ↑Philadelphia. The First Continental Congress was in 1774 and made demands for more rights from Britain. The Second Continental Congress began in 1775 and passed the ↑Declaration of Independence and the ↑Articles of Confederation.
