the Congressional Gold Medal
the Congressional Gold Medal [the Congressional Gold Medal] BrE NAmE the highest award given by ↑Congress to US ↑civilians. It is presented to men and women who have done something special for the nation. The first was given to George ↑Washington in 1776, and the singer Frank Sinatra received the 258th award in 1998. Others who have received it include John Wayne, Bob Hope, Walt ↑Disney, George and Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Marian Anderson and Aaron Copland.
