the Church in Wales
the Church in Wales [the Church in Wales] BrE NAmE the Welsh branch of the ↑Church of England. It became the main Welsh Church in the 16th century, although in the 18th and 19th centuries the majority of people in Wales left it and joined ↑Nonconformist Churches such as the ↑Baptists and the ↑Methodists. The Church in Wales is now a ‘disestablished’ church, i.e. the British king or queen is no longer its Supreme Governor and it has no connections with the British State.
