the Black Prince [the Black Prince] BrE NAmE
(1330–76) the name by which Prince Edward, the eldest son of King ↑Edward III of England, is usually known, though the reason for the name is not known. He showed that he was an excellent soldier at the Battle of Crécy when he was only 16. He died before his father, so his son Richard became the next king.
