a range of mountains in eastern North America. It runs 1 800 miles/2 900 kilometres from Newfoundland in Canada to central Alabama in the US. This includes the region of ↑Appalachia and the ↑Allegheny Mountains, the ↑Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a long-distance path with signs for ↑hikers (= people walking for pleasure).
